Reuse of store fixtures is the renewed use of fit-outs, furniture or components from one store for the same purpose, in the same or another store, without processing them into raw material. In the waste hierarchy of the German Circular Economy Act, preparing for reuse ranks above recycling: the component and its value are preserved, rather than only recovering material.
Relocation within the store portfolio
For retail chains, relocation is the typical case: shelving, counters or lighting removed from one store are installed in another store in the same portfolio. This works because locations are in different phases at the same time. While one store is being remodelled, another is opening.
Prerequisites
- standardised dimensions and systems, for example from a retail rollout
- reversible connections (Design for Disassembly)
- storage logistics and a material inventory showing what is installed where
Limits
Fire safety requirements, missing test certificates and changes to the brand identity can rule out reuse of tenant fit-outs. If a component is used for a different purpose, this is called repurposing. Which option best preserves value is described by Restwertrückführung.
